The Tax Programme

By the end of our three-year Tax programme, you'll hold a world-respected accountancy qualification (ACA) and will have completed a tour of the different tax teams within Barclays. You’ll have an excellent understanding not just of tax, but of Barclays as a whole and finance in general.

During the programme you'll be provided with the opportunity to work in some of the following teams:

  • Group Corporation Tax
  • Group VAT and Transfer Pricing
  • Group Operational and Employment Taxes
  • Global Retail Banking Tax Team
  • Barclays Capital Tax Team
  • Barclays Wealth Tax Team

Up to six rotations will be available to you during your three-year training contract. You could even choose to undertake a rotation outside of tax – in Finance or Treasury for example. Depending on which team you're in, your day-to-day work could involve preparing tax and VAT returns to send to HM Revenue and Customs or working with the businesses to understand their finances and ensure that the tax implications are fully understood.

You could also find yourself advising on our vast range of employment tax issues or making sure that the tax elements of our many offerings to our customers are correct. If you're supporting our transactions team, you'll help the business make the right decisions on major deals such as acquisitions, joint ventures and overseas expansions.

There's a lot to learn in a short space of time, but you'll be surrounded by highly talented people who’ll give you plenty of support. You'll have to learn the basics first – the Chartered Accountancy qualification will help here. You'll also have the support of mentors and buddies plus access to our award-winning training on the full range of tax, finance and financial services issues.

The ACA qualification – what does it involve?
Professional training is an essential part of your development within Tax – and the Association of Chartered Accountants qualification has long been regarded as one of the top qualifications on offer.

Usually you need to join a firm of Chartered Accountants as a trainee to study for the ACA, but we’re delighted to be one of the first non-accountancy firms to be accredited to train graduates for this qualification. You can find a lot of information about the qualification and about becoming a Chartered Accountant on their website.

The syllabus covers:

  • Tax
  • Business management
  • Business finance
  • Auditing
  • Financial reporting

You’ll sit three sets of exams and various internet based assessments over the three-year course. There's no question that it's hard work, particularly as you have your job to think about as well, but we'll give you plenty of support including paying your tuition and exam fees and making sure you have plenty of study leave.
