What inspires you?
I’m drawing a football and the reason I’m drawing a football is because it really does sum up the Retail Bank – we’re one big team, and no matter how many superstars we have we have to go as a team and with that we have to deliver in front of our fans or customers and it really does sum up the team spirit that is within Retail.
What attracted you to Barclays?
What really attracted me to Barclays was the global brand, the opportunity to work for such a big organisation and the fact that I could move in different business areas. It’s also the opportunity to keep developing on the leadership programme. There are always opportunities to keep developing yourself and new skills.
Why did you choose to join Retail Banking?
I chose to join Retail because at present Barclays is transforming the retail network to become a real retail bank and I wanted to be a part of that. I’m a retailer myself and I wanted to help transform the Retail Bank.
What does Retail Banking do?
What we do in the Retail Bank is we make sure that we meet all the needs of our personal customers. We have 1300 branches and we make sure that we serve them for premier customers, business customers and our personal customers.
What have you been doing since you joined?
Since I joined Barclays I have been a Branch Manager. I have taken on training to develop myself into a Branch Manager. I have also been working on a project with the financial planning sector of the business to start up investor events in the evenings. I have also taken part in a post graduate certificate.
What does your current role involve?
My current role at the moment, I am a Branch Manager. I lead a team of 17 people. That includes a Premier Manager, a Financial Planner and a Business Manager. Every day I have to motivate the team - that’s taking team meetings in the morning, taking meetings with my personal bankers throughout the day. I then take regular meetings with my personal bankers and serve customers throughout the day and then at the end of the day we sit down and review what we’ve done and make sure that we have made all of our targets and really satisfied all of our customers.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The aspect of my job that I enjoy the most is the people. Every single day, interacting with my staff and the customers and just really motivating all my team and watching them grow and develop to become really successful people within the bank.
Can you outline and interesting projects you’ve been involved with?
One of the projects that I have been involved with on the retail graduate programme was to develop a seminar channel and that’s working with the Financial Planners to hold investment events to invite our high net customers into the branches. And I have been asked to look at all of the regions across the country with five other member of the graduate team and we have embedded this in the network.
What support and training have you had since joining?
I’ve had lots of training and support whilst on the graduate programme. From my Area Director, she has developed me as a Branch Manager and a leader and then I have also had development from the co-ordinator of the graduate programme who has developed our leadership skills and really made us home in on our areas of strengths and weaknesses. Then I have also taken part in learning tracks to become a Branch Manager. So lots of development.
