Jessica Henshall - Barclaycard

What inspires you?

Travel inspires me – I love visiting difference places and experiencing different cultures. The best thing about working for an organisation like Barclays is you’ve always got that opportunity.

What attracted you to Barclays?

I was attracted to Barclays because of its reputation, more than anything. It has a reputation for being innovative and inspirational, and it has a genuine desire to be number one.

Can you briefly describe what Barclaycard does?

Barclaycard provides consumer credit cards, corporate credit cards and also payment acceptance services. I began in the UK Cards market which provides the consumer cards.

What have you been doing since you joined?

I joined the cross-sales team within UK Cards, which meant I worked with the product managers on things like payment protection insurance, identity protection and travel insurance. I then moved over to the retentions part of that team developing our retention strategy and delivering initiatives. I’m now in payment acceptance and a manager for the public sector.

What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy being given such responsibility. I’m given projects to own and I can see them through from conception to resolution. I like making contacts within the business and I enjoy the social side of the job.

Can you outline a couple of projects you’ve been involved with?

The first major project I was involved in was a travel insurance marketing campaign. It was a first for Barclaycard and it was a trigger-based campaign – so whenever anyone buys a holiday on their Barclaycard, within a week they’ll have our travel insurance product marketed to them. I also worked on some payment protection insurance retention initiatives which meant working with the call centres and various stakeholders around the business to retain our payment protection insurance customers.

What qualities do you need to succeed at Barclays?

I think you need to be confident, you need to be ambitious, you need to be motivated, you need to have great time management and organisational skills and above all, you need to be a good communicator.

What kind of person do you need to be to succeed in Barclaycard?

To be successful in my business area you need to be creative, you need to be a quick thinker and you need to be able to develop strong working relationships.

Can you outline any inspirational moments you’ve been involved with?

I think my most inspirational moment was when my trigger travel campaign was finally delivered. It was a combination of a lot of hard work between all business areas and to achieve it was brilliant. It showed that we can do anything, with the right people working on it, and if we put our minds to it.

Why join Barclaycard?

I think if you want to be motivated, constantly challenged and given the opportunity to develop yourself and achieve your aspirations, then come and work for Barclaycard.

Who at work inspires you and why?

There are many people that inspire me at Barclaycard for many different reasons, one of these being a colleague from my old team. He had many challenges while I was working with him and he dealt with them all calmly and professionally. Everything he did, he did with Barclaycard and with the customer at the heart.
